How to choose your Edge Rods?

Comment choisir sa canne Edge Rods ?

At Edge Rods Europe, you'll find a wide range of casting, spinning and fly rods. Here are a few tips to help you find the rod that's right for you.

1 - USE THE VARIOUS FILTERS

Edge Rods Europe rods are organized by universe, species or technique.  Filters allow you to refine your search. By surfing the site and using the various filters, you'll be able to find the rod that suits you best.

2 - UNDERSTANDING REFERENCES

Rod references can seem "barbaric" when you don't know the meaning and logic of the acronyms. Take the example of the BWS DSR 711-1
  • BWS = Black Widow Spinning
  • DSR = Drop Shot Rod
  • 711 = 7’11 » (2,16 m), power 1
  • 1 = Single-strand rod

Another example : SWC MBR 733-1
  • SWC = Silver Widow Casting
  • MBR = Mag Bass Rod
  • 733 = 7’3″ (2,21 m), power 3
  • 1 = Single-strand rod

3 - UNDERSTANDING TECHNIQUES

In an Edge rod reference, the second group of letters corresponds to the fishing technique for which the rod was designed. Understanding the original technique can, in some cases, explain why there is a power difference between the manufacturer's power and the actual power. Although a rod is designed for a specific fishing technique and range of use, rods can be misused.

Here are some explanations of certain techniques:

  • MB : Mag bass = Black bass rod with hard tip, ideal for extracting fish. Also ideal for Bottom bouncing.
  • SJ : Spin Jig = More versatile bass rod than the MBs. Just as effective with a soft lure as with a small bib lure.
  • Flip : Flipping = Technique which consists in placing a lure precisely in the holes by holding the line in your hand. Requires a long, powerful rod.
  • DS : Drop Shot = Technique which consists in making a soft lure jump close to the bottom. Blank X-Fast with soft but sensitive tip.
  • SWB : Swimbait = Long, powerful rod for casting bulky lures that swim with a simple straight retrieve.
  • CB : Crankbait = Lure with large lip that vibrates in the rod. Soft-tipped rod to dampen vibrations.
  • HS : Hot Shot = This technique is used in boats in search of large Trout and Salmon. The principle is to keep a lure with a large lip in the current or behind a boat in drag. Long, powerful rod with soft tip.
  • ST : Steelhead = Large American Trout. Although "ST" rods may be advertised as Fast or X-Fast, they are actually very progressive.
  • SLJ : Slow Jigging = Vertical saltwater fishing technique involving the slow movement of Metallic lures. The rods are short, progressive and designed for fighting in open water.
  • HL : Highliner = Powerful spinning or trolling rods, from 20 to 80 lb, designed for Saltwater fishing.
  • FW : Freshwater = A range of rods designed for fishing for small fish in Freshwater fishing. These rods are ideal for small minnows and spoons.
  • ISR : Inshore = A series of spinning rods designed for inshore fishing. Excellent value for money rods for Seabass fishing, based mainly on SJ Blanks.
  • P : Pitching = Short underhand cast, for highly accurate short casts (less than 15 m). Requires a long, powerful rod.
  • HV : Hover = Vertical fishing technique that consists in flying over the bottom with eggs or baits mounted in a drift. These are Casting rods, with a slim tip but plenty of reserve power.
  • SUR : Surf = Long spinning and Casting rods for shore fishing with lure or bait.
